Macular Degeneration
At Maple Grove Eye Clinic, we specialize in the management and treatment of macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss. Our approach focuses on preserving your central vision and enhancing your quality of life.

Understanding Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for clear central vision. This condition can significantly impact daily activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Early detection and proactive management are key to preserving vision.
Knowledge is Power
The good news is that most cases of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are treatable. However its important to remember that the earlier the diagnosis is made, the better the outcome will be. If AMD runs in your family its a good idea to have routine eye exams every year, especially over the age of 50.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
The most important image your eye doctor will take of your eyes is called Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT. Using a scanning laser, OCT can create a 3D image of the retina with 3 micron resolution. These images allow your doctor detect the problems that could threaten your vision.

In the image on the left, it is easy to see the differences between a normal macula and a diseased macula. Dry macular degeneration presents with small benign nodules called drusen. Geographic atrophy (GA) shows light shining through an area where the rods and cones have been lost. Eyes with wet AMD typically have areas of fluid accumulation that can look like swiss cheese.

All of these conditions are treatable if detected EARLY, but frequently result in blindness if neglected!
Self Care
There are two aspects to caring for your AMD at home.
-
Test your vision using an Amsler grid daily.
